Spellbinder Mystery

In addition to Crazy Quilting I also have an embroidery machine. I love to collect free designs from all over the web. One website, San Francisco Stitch Company is having a mystery project. Each week they are offering a free embroidery design with directions to make a small mystery project. Currently we are on week three. Here are the three designs sewed together as directed. So far it is pretty cute.

Ladies of Spring Block

I often watch television in the evening and don't like to sit without something in my hand. The round robins I am in keep me pretty busy. Often though, I am without a block to work on, so I pieced a block for myself, just for a diversion. The centerpiece of the block was a photo transfer I received that looked to be in a burlap type material. It was kind of neat. I also came across a little bag of straw hats at a garage sale and decided to add one to the block. The basket was made using water soluable stabilizer on my embroidery machine, and the nest was a beading experiment. What do you think?

Swedish Block

I commited to making a block for the Crazy Quilting International Group. They wanted to make a block for all the countries that were represented in our organization. You didn't have to be from the country to make the block. I asked for the Swedish block as a tip to my paternal grandfather. I originally pieced the block seen below, but after a few months I had ideas, (dala horse, a Carl Larsson painting, ice skates, faux Swedish weaving, country flower and some Swedish folk art) but did not know what to do about placement. I had difficulty knowing what to do first.

I asked for advice from a Crazy Quilting guru in our group. She took my ideas and photo-shopped them to show possibilities. She also advised that the silkie that I selected was too small and underwelming for the size of the block. She choose another Carl Larsson painting and showed me the difference.

Ok, now I had an idea where to start. Here is the completed block after I took Gerry's advice.. I think it looks pretty nice. The only change I may make is to put some trim along the seam under the ice skates to make them stand out better against the blue.

Well, I went ahead and did as I said, I believe adding the lace makes the skates stand out better, so here is the finished block ready to mail!

Overall, I am very pleased with it, and plan to make a similiar one so I can have one of my own.

Carol's Wine Block

After a few adjustments I finished my work on Carol's Wine block. I was the first to work on it. I dyed grape motif lace. Stitced a grape beaded seam, and a bunch of grape beads. I accented the red around the wine label, added trim to the curve and another lace grape motif. Hope she likes it. She chose really nice fabrics.

I received my block back from the Sewing theme Round Robin this week. Here are the before and after pics. I may make a sewing machine cover out of this block. I have a few more things I may add to the block first. Overall I am very pleased with the block, thanks to Lorrie, Sharon, Pegsue and Carol.

Singer's 160th Anniversary

A couple weeks ago I found about Singer Sewing Machine Company's 160th Anniversary. They are putting out a commemorative sewing machine and I just love it. It is a limited edition and for now only available on HSN, (and currently out of stock). Unless I talk myself out of it, I may have to have one. It is so beautiful, and reminiscent of the old style... We'll see, keepya posted.

Lorrie's Finished Machine Cover Block

I finished up the last block in the Sewing Round Robin. This one is for Lorrie in Canada, she is using it to make a sewing machine cover. She requested butterflies, since no one had added any yet, I gave her three and threw in a dragonfly for good measure. I also added buttons, lace, charms and ribbon. It was bigger than the suggested 12" block so there are a few patches left for her to complete. I hope she likes it. I have added the block before embellishement and after 4 worked on it!

Bringing them Home

Last night, my husband and I drove to Selfridge Air Force National Guard Base near Utica, MI. My son was coming home from his short deployment to Afghanistan. He left from the airport in Detroit, so we didn't know quite what to expect. We were directed to the dining hall at the base. It reminded me of a hotel conference room, not a dining hall. We found that there were over 300 airmen (and women), returning that night. All of them had some family there, there was an estimated 1000 people waiting in the dining area. We were impressed that there were refreshments for the families. Kudos to Dunkin Donuts, Frito-Lay, Hershey and Chex.

Many people were dressed patriotically and/or had signs, banners, and balloons in anticipation of their loved ones.

The 300 airmen arrived in sets of 5-7 after they went through customs and processing. It was fun to watch the many happy reunions.

Finally after a 2 hour wait, Thomas arrived 299 out of 300 to arrive! First thing he wanted was a Halo Burger (a local hamburger chain), we were happy to oblige. We are glad to have him home!

Paisley's for Hubbie

My husband, Fuzzy has loved paisleys since the 60's when he wore a paisley tie each day to Catholic High School. So for a surprise this year I created a piasley wall hanging for him with the blocks from the round robin I was in earlier this year. I could not find any black background paisley to surround the blocks, so I went with the peace sign motif. A little busy for some people, but he loved it....

Fairy Tale Blocks Home.

A week or so ago I received the 6 blocks I sent around with a Fairy Tale theme. I chose centerpiece motifs of pictures in vintage children's books. Here are the results:

First is from Misty in Pennsylvania who chose the Frog Prince. I love the big flower and how she embroidered over the pattern in the brown fabric to make it showier.

Next, Rita in Kansas chose Little Red Riding Hood. She commented that her maiden name was Wolf, so this block called to her. I enjoy using pieces of broken jewelry on blocks, her owl is an example of how this can really add glamour to a block.

Beryl in New York chose Jack and the Beanstalk, she added a terrific vine effect to echo the theme.

Carol of Kansas chose Rumpelstilskin and took advantage of his love of gold.

Last, but not least Cathy in Iowa settled on the Princess and the Pea. She did not disappoint with her addition of the spectacular embroidered pea pod.

Puss n Boots, came back for me to finish.

I liked these blocks so well, that I have found a few more silkies and plan to make a few more. Here is Beauty and the Beast. I also have a Cinderella I haven't pieced into a block yet. I'll keep you posted.

On our way back from the airport we stopped at the Ikea store. There is only one in the state of MI. If you have never been, it is worth the stop, lots of inspiration. We didn't take a lot of pics, but here are two. Fuzzy in one of the kitchen displays and a view from the cafeteria to the outside of the store. That cool lamp is sold in the store, less than $100.

Veteran's Day 2011

How fitting that my son Thomas, was deployed to Afghanistan on this day. My husband and I drove him to the Detroit airport yesterday for his trip. He serves in the Airforce and does intelligence briefings for pilots. Thankfully his team will only be there a couple months. We are proud!

While cleaning my sewing room, I came across this framed piece of quilting. I thought the age of the quilt and the muted colors was perfect for this picture. The frame was an odd shape. So I added the handmade crochet trim to cover the edges of the photo. I think it looks great... what do you think?

Paula's Bird Block

I have had this block a while and kept looking at what I could add. After reading Paula's wishes, she said she loved butterflies as well as birds. So I decided to make one using my embroidery machine on fabric made of Angelina Fibers. Here is the result. I embroidered the flowers using the print on the white fabric as the pattern.

Joyce was the first to work on it. I love the peacock and how she echoed the silkie picture with her hummingbird motif. Can's wait to see what the rest of the "gang" comes up with.

Strawberry Shortcake Anyone?

I have been an admirer of those glass garden totems for a while. Basically you take old glassware, dishes, pottery, etc. Glue them together and put them in the garden. They can be beautiful. I have been collecting glass over the summer, but hadn't had enough courage to put one together. With my husband home over the weekend, we decided to give it a try by working on a "joke" totem for a friend. Mistakes and flaws would be ok. My hubbie and his friend have a running joke about Strawberry Shortcake and they are sending gag gifts both ways. So we decided to make a Strawberry Shortcake totem. What do you think?

Labor Day Flashback

I have been remiss on posting over the summer due to my work schedule. It is much reduced now so I am trying to catch up. Over Labor Day we were able to take a 4 day trip to Northern Indiana. We stayed just over the border in Three Rivers, MI. and we were able to meet some friends from Illinois to share the weekend with us. Sheryl is a friend from college and her husband Paul. We brought our bikes and were able to relax and explore the area, drove into Amish country in Indiana, and had a great time.

Hubbie and I went to a few garage sales yesterday. I found this chair. It was only $1. I think I will fill in the back "hole" by cutting a board to fit and recovering it with some fabric. New Fairy Tale Round Robin to Start

The Round Robin that begins in May is formally called "Anything Goes". I took that to mean I could pick any theme I wanted. So, I used some vintage illustrations from children's fairy tale books. I am excited to see how they turn out!

Karaoke with Friends

My hubbie's long-time friend has a daughter who is showing herself to be a terrific singer. We met a a local VFW to watch her perform karaoke. Here is 18 year old Lana belting the Patsy Cline tune, "Strange".

Fuzzy decided to strut his stuff too. His confidence with soaring with his new duds and fancy hat I picked out for him. He sang his "signature" tune, "Mustang Sally".

The two of them ended with a rousing rendition of "Bobby McGee". We hope to meet up with them again, Maybe next time I will get up on stage!

My hubbie, Fuzzy is a big baseball fan, as evidenced by his four team tattoos on his forearms. He had only dreamed about the opportunity of attending a Spring Trainging game. He was able to attend two in Florida. He saw the Detroit Tigers game in Lakeland while I attended my conference. Later I went with him to a game at the Astros stadium, the visiting Tigers won, 9-1.

I can't believe it is almost a month since I last posted. It has been a busy month, Fuzzy had a lot of doctor appointments and I worked a lot to make up for the time I took off. We were able to sneak away to Florida for 8 days. I attended a conference and Fuzzy was able to relax. We visited friends, went to an art fair, and attended baseball games. Hopefully we will be able to go back next year. Here is Fuzzy against a palm tree the day we left. When we returned to Michigan, we were greated with an ice storm!

I had seen tree of life pendants at several craft shows over the fall and decided to investigate how to make one. The most helpful was this tutorial on You Tube. Here are the results. I think they turned out pretty nice for my first time making one, as well as doing wire wrapping. I already taught the technique to two co-workers and we will all wear them to work on Wednesday.

My Sewing Nook

On this couch is where I do my sewing. Below the Ott light is a table with many of my supplies, cans of trims, threads, etc. Chloe is my constant companion, and either is next to me or on the chair by the window looking out. Here she is in a rare cowboy pose on the couch.

I had a great birthday. I took the whole day off work, I drove to Lansing and Mason, Michigan and stopped at some quilt and needlework shops. At the end of the day, my husband met me for dinner after he got off work. I had coconut shrimp and steak!

Thrift Store Gown

We made an impromptu stop at the Salvation Army in Coldwater, MI on the way home from Indiana last weekend. Couldn't pass up the big 50% off sign in the window. I got a couple cool things. One was this wedding gown, that and a gorgeous train were priced together at $12. The dress is made of an overlay of venice lace flowers, probably about 200-300. Even in our little town of Owosso, wedding gowns at the thrift store are $85-100 and rarely are included in the sales. I would be interested in them for the lace and fabric for crazy quilting....So I think this was a steal.

This train was sold with the dress, but I do not think they go together. It is almost 7ft. long and has loads of lace and satin. I thought the 3 satin roses at the top were worth the price of the train.

Cassie's Purse

My son's girlfriend is studying to be a nurse. He is going out to AZ to visit in a couple weeks. I asked him if it would be ok to make give her a homemade belated Christmas gift. He said OK, so I sewed up this little purse, using a nurse embroidery and her favorite colors of green. She also likes outdoorsy. I think it turned out pretty cute. I hope she likes it. The pattern is from Lazy Girl Designs and is the Runaround Bag. I use it all the time, it is so easy to make.... Update 1-3-11: I dropped it off to my son today. He liked it, I could tell by his one word answer, "cool".
