Candji's Asian Block

I received my block from Candji for the Oriental swap. It is a big block, about 15" square, The fabrics are just lovely. I always have a problem deciding where to start on a block and this one is no exception. I was thinking of doing a fan, or maybe a motif using an embroidery pattern and filling in with beads instead of threads... Scale is another concern.  Any ideas?

  1. Hi Darlene:
I think I would start with the large block in the lower left corner, and perhaps the darker blue block just to its left. Just get started and ideas will start coming. Maybe work the long seam to get yourself started.

  2. Hallo Darlene,I too would start on the lower left,it will give you a nice aerea to embroider a larger motiv to stand out without a bussy background.Keep us posted on your progress.

  3. Hi Darlene! What caught my eye immediately was the dragon in the center. I think if it were me, I would start by outlining him in gold, either trim or beads. Can't wait to see what you do!

  4. I see two pieces that have circles with flowers in them and I see lots of swirls. I would try some circular flowers amidst some swirls in the long pie shaped blue piece by the dragon's behind. Then your flowers would be balanced by the other two blocks with circular flowers. I might do a fan that spanned the tan and blue/white piece below it. And I'm trying to think of something the dragon could be breathing out instead of fire - a flower breathing dragon? a butterfly breathing dragon? I would try to make something flowing out of the dragon's mouth (but I probably would not succeed and would give that up but I'd sure think about if for a long time).

(There's a reason I didn't sign up for an Asian block RR...I have no ideas but I am honored that you think I would)
